Paresh Maity

Born in 1965, he studied Painting (BFA) at Govt. College of Art and Craft, Kolkata and Painting (MFA), College of Art, New Delhi. Maity has had a number of solo exhibitions since his first at Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata in 1988 throughout India and in Germany, the UK, USA and Singapore and is represented in several private and public collections in India and abroad. He is the recipient of Harmony Award, Mumbai (1999); British Council Visitor ship (1993); All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society Award for Best Water Color Painting, New Delhi (1990); Award from Indian Society of Oriental Art (1986) and a Gold Medal from Russia, among others. Paresh Maity has already emerged as an artist of rare and extraordinary talent and ranks among the more important figures of contemporary Indian Art today. His brilliance and creativity lie in his ability to internalize the Indian experience and capture its essence. His early works reflect his formal training; largely figurative, they were especially the transparent watercolours, what might be called ‘picturesque’. But gradually he began to move towards abstraction. Though still involved with landscape, Maity’s imagery and form became more and more abstract until, with a flourish of a few calligraphic strokes and washes of colour, he came to create pictures of great evanescent beauty. Restless by nature and an avid traveler, he journeys across India and the world in search of new inspiration. Today, his works reflect an artist deeply committed to the marriage of joy and celebration of life. His paintings exude a powerful sensuality and positive energy. Maity lives and works in Delhi, India.
